ICI has been partnering with ARMDS to empower rural underprivileged individuals with disabilities and the vulnerable by providing basic skills and infrastructure for life and sustenance.
Animators for Rural Multipurpose Development Society (ARMDS) organizes a residential school for school dropouts, where 47 students are currently pursuing their studies from 1st to 8th grade. Additionally, 46 children with Cerebral Palsy and Mental Retardation (CP/MR) attend special education and therapy at Arpanam Special School for Intellectually Disabled Children. Furthermore, 16 children from the Autism Early Intervention Centre undergo regular therapy with their parents, primarily their mothers.
As more trees are cut down, evaporation levels are disrupted, reducing moisture in the air and unbalancing the water cycle. A continuous cycle of dry air, low humidity, and decreased precipitation leads to a drought-prone, desert-like climate. Villupuram district in Tamil Nadu is no exception. Monsoons have been failing in recent years, causing regular employment for parents in agricultural lands to decline. Many parents are forced to wander in search of work or migrate in search of jobs due to inadequate rainfall and water. Without sufficient water for irrigation, cultivation is impossible. The school cannot maintain a kitchen garden, leading to poor nutrition and frequent illness among the children.
ARMDS has established a kitchen garden, using both waste bathing water and good water for irrigation. However, in recent months, water levels have dropped significantly, leaving the children with insufficient drinking water.
In response, ICI has decided to partner with ARMDS to assist the affected population, particularly CP/MR individuals, persons with disabilities (PWDs), the vulnerable, and the poorest, including children and women whose health needs attention. In the past, vegetables and greens from the kitchen garden were of high quality, resulting in fewer sick children.
ICI is working with ARMDS to establish a borewell with an electric pump system to extract water for the school, villagers, and to irrigate their kitchen garden.
Arpanam Special School for Intellectual Disable Children
Tamil Nadu, India
Project Objectives
-To dig a bore well and extract adequate water to irrigate the kitchen garden.
-To reassure good health of the rural poor dropouts’ children and cerebral palsy and mentally retarded children.
-To prevent children falling sick.
-To hike the quality of health of children at ARMDS.
-To generate additional income through Kitchen Garden and utilise the amount for the children for purchase of other needed things.
ARMDS has a soft corner for the CP/MR and the Persons with Disabilities (PWD), – for the ‘Children with Cerebral Palsy and Mental Retardation’. In order to offer them a promising new life, the Board of ARMDS decided to start a separate school for these children to provide individualised care and attention for these uncared children.
This School is counted among the top-rated Schools in Tamil Nadu with an excellent academic track record.
India is known for its rich cultural heritage. It has got variety of cultures and multi languages spoken across India. Geographically it is characterised by autumn, cold and summer seasons. People belong to various races. There is multiparty system in India. People gather based on language minority, religious minority, and caste minority, cultural and racial minority. Caste system is one of the greatest setbacks in India. People are divided as low caste and high caste. It is certainly a kind of stigma in people.
